SHIPS HOLLOW-CORE POLYMER OPTICAL FIBER DRAW TOWER
Advanced Controls and Innovative Design Enhance Process Refinement and Production
Flexibility
Wilmington, MA – December 10, 2005– Automation Engineering
Incorporated (AEi), a leading supplier of high precision automation
systems, is shipping a customized fiber draw tower for research and
development of hollow-core polymer fibers to an un-named customer.
The tower incorporates servo-controlled preform downfeed, tractor,
and spooling, as well as a HEPA filtered upper tower structure and
precise drawn diameter control via laser micrometer feedback. The adjustable
clamping pressure of the tractor design allows for the fragile hollow
fiber to be drawn without deforming the cross-section.
The ability to create and save customized configurations
allows the researchers to quickly change tower setups for different
experiments and fiber runs. Fiber optic drawing towers manufacture
optical fiber for research or production volumes for use in applications
including computers, telecommunications and consumer electronics.
According to AEi Chief Operating Officer Justin Roe ,
“interest in polymer fibers has grown significantly in recent years
because of its lower cost and wide applicability to many consumer,
industrial, medical, and sensing applications. AEi is pleased that
we are able to assist in the introduction and advancement of these
new products with the development of this flexible fiber drawing system.”
