Dr. Michael Chiu, Chief Technology Officer
Dr. Chiu brings a track record of exceptional success in innovation, product commercialization and business development to AEi’s management team. His strengths in corporate strategy and outstanding leadership, combined with his operations management skills and experience in product development and global product support, are valuable resources for our many customers across various world markets.
Dr. Chiu founded and led several companies in the medical device and cleantech sectors, including a successful exit via acquisition. He has experience with early-stage and venture financing and has served in various positions including President, CEO, and CTO. Dr. Chiu also serves on the board of the LGL Group (AMEX: LGL) and as an advisor and guest lecturer at MIT.
Prior experience includes multiple positions at Teradyne including systems engineering, marketing and ultimately General Manager of Global Custom Products and Services for this semiconductor capital equipment leader.
Dr. Chiu earned his Doctorate and Master’s degrees from MIT, where his focus was on high-precision machine and systems design, and his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. He also received an MBA through the MIT/Sloan-Fellows Program in Innovation and Global Leadership. Dr. Chiu also holds six patents with additional patents pending and is a recipient of R&D magazine’s R&D 100 Award.
Larry Mihalchik, Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Mihalchik joined AEi in May 2014 with a distinguished management career primarily in the Massachusetts high-tech sector. Mr.Mihalchik brings not only an impressive financial acumen but also extensive operating background in emerging and mid-sized companies. Additionally, he has broad experience with international operations.
As CFO at AEi, Mr. Mihalchik is responsible for all financial operations of the company including business planning and budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cost-benefit analysis, treasury functions, and fundraising activities.
Before AEi, Mr. Mihalchik was CFO of Next Step Living, Inc., a services company that was published in Inc Magazine’s list of 100 fastest growing private companies in the United States. Previously, Mr. Mihalchik led the initial public offerings of Timberland and Chomerics and negotiated the sale of three public companies at significant premiums. He has raised more the $75 million from venture capital and private equity firms. He has also served on the Board of Directors of several companies, both as a non-management member and in his executive capacity.
Mr. Mihalchik is a graduate of Westminster College in Wilmington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance and Accounting. He also received his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate.
David Hamel, Vice President of Global Sales
As VP of Global Sales, Mr. Hamel brings a strong background of significant achievement in leading high-technology capital equipment sales and marketing efforts across multiple territories, including the United States, Europe, and Asia. His current focus is the worldwide selling of AEi’s CMAT Modular Platform. He brings over 15 years of experience in the management of multinational capital equipment accounts in the areas of robotics, advanced thermal control, automated test equipment (ATE), machine vision and manufacturing process software. He drives the development of next-generation equipment through the formation of close working partnerships that help lead business growth. Mr. Hamel joined AEi from Boston Semi Equipment/ Test Advantage Hardware where he was the Director of Sales. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts.
George Rose, Senior Director of Product Strategy
Mr. Rose is an accomplished general manager with more than 20 years of extensive product development, marketing, finance and global business strategy experience. Mr. Rose has spent his career developing and managing businesses within the semiconductor capital equipment and fiber optic test and measurement markets.
Mr. Rose joins AEi from Fujikura where he was General Manager of AFL Noyes Fiber Systems Division where he grew the business to $26 million by implementing broad process changes and increased new product introduction to the international handheld fiber optic metrology business. Before that, Mr. Rose spent 16 years at Teradyne where he held several GM positions, including GM of LCD Driver and the $300 million Broadband business units.
Mr. Rose earned both his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA from Boston University, graduating with high honors focused on Marketing, Finance, and Strategy.
Patrick Tong, General Manager, Asia
Mr. Tong has 30 plus years of business development and sales management experience with Asian multi-national technology companies in both the electronics and plastic industries. Mr. Tong has a proven track record in directly selling and driving professional sales and customer services teams to increase market share, sales turnover, and customer satisfaction.
Mr. Tong is the General Manager of the Asia Operations of Automation Engineering Inc. He is based in Hong Kong and is chartered to build up the sales and support infrastructure in Asia to support the fast growing business in active alignment solutions.
Mr. Tong graduated from the University of Hong Kong with Bachelor Degree in Engineering and Master Degree in Business Administration. He has held various sales, support and management positions with several USA-based multinational companies including Teradyne, Trexel, and HP.
Alan Gulachenski, Director of Operations
Mr. Gulachenski is a successful business leader with a diverse background across industries, technologies, sales environments, and markets. He has served on private boards and has managed corporate transformations and growth initiatives increasing revenue and profits of operating divisions and private equity-backed portfolio companies. He is a hand’s on manager with transparent style built on unwavering accuracy, credibility, and integrity.
Most recently Mr. Gulachenski joins AEi from New England Confectionery Company, Inc. (Necco) where he was President, Chief Executive Officer, and Board Member. Before that he held several executive management positions at American Capital, and was GM/VP at SMART Modular Technologies and White Electronic Design in the New England Area.
Mr. Gulachenski graduated from Northeastern University with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Mr. Gulachenski is co-developer of 4 patents.
Phil Wendell, Director North American Sales
Mr. Wendell brings more than 27 years of global sales and marketing experience in the semiconductor test industry to AEi. Mr. Wendell joined AEi from Optimal+, a big data analytics start-up, where he was VP of Worldwide Sales.
Mr. Wendell worked at Teradyne for 25 years, where he most recently served as GM of U.S. Sales and Service. In this role, Mr. Wendell led a team of more than 200 account managers, applications and sales support employees with worldwide responsibility for all U.S. headquartered customers including their overseas sites and subcontract manufacturing suppliers in Asia. Mr. Wendell’s teams have been consistently selected as “Best Capital Equipment Supplier” by top 25 worldwide semiconductor companies.
Mr. Wendell graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. He also graduated from the MBA+ Sales Leadership Certificate program at the University of Texas.
Roger Burns – Director, Applications Engineering
Mr. Burns joined Automation Engineering, Inc as Director of Applications Engineering in 2015. He brings particular expertise in the field of electronics and systems engineering as well as design for manufacturability and new product introduction.
Before joining AEI, Mr. Burns was Vice President of Engineering of OLEV Technologies, a privately funded Boston area startup seeking to introduce very high power wireless charging for electric vehicles to US urban transit buses and delivery vehicles. He served as co-chair of the SAE J2954/2 Heavy Duty Wireless Standardization Committee.
Additionally, Mr. Burns has held senior engineering positions at Teradyne, Inc., in process and technology development, new product introduction and multi-functional team leadership. Roger was Lead Technical Analyst and Applications Manager for DC, Power and Automotive Markets where he was responsible for defining product directions for the test needs of the automotive market in the power management sector.
Mr. Burns holds a BSEE from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has studied RF design and communications at the graduate level and has completed the Teradyne – Babson Executive Certificate Program. Roger is a member of the IEEE, SAE.
