Application Examples: Precision Vision Guided Alignment
of Macro Lens

This application required a long, slender macro lens to be bonded to a custom camera sensor package with a linear alignment accuracy of 7.5um, and rotation accuracy of 20 arc-seconds, while maintaining a Class 10 clean room environment inside the machine.

Application Requirements:

  • Vision guided motion
  • Automated epoxy dispense and UV cure
  • Class 10 cleanroom
  • Flexure design
  • Epoxy material selection

AEi implemented a solution using a granite subplate with passive vibration isolation, sub-micron resolution motion stages, high-magnification vision system with coaxial and off-axis lighting, and an air-bearing flexure compliant vacuum tool to pick the lens from the part nest, position it inside the camera package with a measured and repeatable seating force, and dispense and UV-cure epoxy to bond the lens in the aligned position.

Cleanliness on the interior of the machine was vital to ensure that none of the high-cost assemblies were lost due to contamination of the lens or camera sensor during assembly. The system utilized fully automated pattern recognition, material handling, and calibration sequences to minimize operator requirements and contamination. The software provided flexibility to allow the customer to easily modify the sequence, or create new ones, to support their evolving geometries, dispense patterns, and process improvement efforts.
